A corsair city facing the sea, Saint-Malo is today a renowned seaside resort. Surrounded by ramparts, the walled city of Saint-Malo was admirably rebuilt identically after its 80% destruction in August 1944. The city of Saint-Malo forms a superb ensemble, with its ramparts, castle, and beautiful buildings. A must-see, the rampart promenade offers splendid views of the sea, the sandy beaches at the foot of the ramparts, the Fort National (a work of Vauban), the port, and the buildings of the city within the walls. To learn about the history of Saint-Malo, head to the castle's large keep, which houses the city and Malouin region's history museum. Visitors can also visit the Grand Aquarium de Saint-Malo, a space entirely dedicated to the marine world. Every four years, the city of Saint-Malo hosts the start of the Route du Rhum, a famous solo transatlantic sailing race that links Saint-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe.
